Tien Giang tourism and the provinces in Mekong Delta are famous for large fruit farms, floating markets and beautiful nature. Travelling Tien Giang you should combine Ben Tre, these provinces are very close together so very favorable for moving.
Ben Tre has been very famous in Vietnam and been called coconut kingdom with the endless coconut farms. Here was also cradle of Vietnam revolutionary uprising.
This article, i will introduce some informations about My Tho city (the seat of Tien Giang province). And Ben Tre, i would say in another post.

How to Get to My Tho
Distance from Sai Gon (Ho Chi Minh city) to My Tho is 70km (over 40 miles), so you may travel by bus or motorbike.
1. Bus
You may consult Phuong Trang bus, a reputation firm in Sai Gon, address: 272-274-276 De Tham, District 1, Ho Chi Minh city. Tel: +84. 83. 837 5570
Addtion, you may catch a bus in Mien Tay bus station, there are many bus go to My Tho in one day.
2. Motorbike
From Sai Gon city, you go straight along 1-highway to Trung Luong junction. This is gateway of My Tho city.
Things to do in Tien Giang – Vietnam
1. Vinh Trang temple (Chùa Vĩnh Tràng) on Nguyen Trung Truc street. The temple was built in 19th century with architecture of Asia-Europe.
2. Dieu Hoa pagoda (Đền Điều Hòa) at 101 – Trinh Hoai Duc street. The pagoda was an accomodation of Nguyen dynasty officials when they was working in the local. This is also the place where has preserved many tangible and intangible values of the local.
3. Chanh Toa My Tho Church (Nhà thờ Chánh tòa Mỹ Tho), at 32 – Hung Vuong street, was built in early 20th century, have ancient architecture of Europe.
4. The streets you should go.
Trung Trac street (đường Trưng Trắc), along the canal, near Tan Long ferry. The street has nice view for photography.
Phan Thanh Gian street (đường Phan Thanh Giản) is gathering place of fruits from many different areas in Mekong Delta.
5. Travelling islets (Du lịch cồn). There are many islets in Tien Giang. You can go to 30/ 4 dock and buy a grafting tour, price is about $5. Else, if you want to travel alone, you can buy a package tour, about $15. The tours are quite similar, you will be taken to Thoi Son islet (cồn Thới Sơn), Phung islet (cồn Phụng) and passing of Ben Tre province.
Addition, there are Long islet (cồn Long) and Lan islet (cồn Lân), if want to visit, you have to buy other tour. But i think above tour is too enough for travelling islets.
6. Cai Be floating market. This is the most attractive in Tien Giang that i think you shouldn’t miss. Floating market is a form of business by boats on rivers, which is very popular in Mekong Delta. In Tien Giang, Cai Be is the bigest floating market, there are about 400 boats gathered at here everyday to trade, very busily.
Cai Be floating market is 40km (25 miles) from My Tho city. To get Cai Be, you catch a car in Dinh Bo Linh street (My Tho city), just about $1. The car will stop at Cai Be tourist dock.
At here, you have to rent a ship to visit the market, price for a boat from $35 to $50, depend on the size. You may graft with other visitors for cheaper.
The float market is opened from 4am to 3pm, busiest from 5am to 8am.
Fruit seasons in Tien Giang
Tien Giang is famous for fruit farms, fruits are divided into the distinct seasons:
– Feb, after lunar new year is Breast-Milk fruit season (Mùa Vú Sữa). Vinh Kim (Vĩnh Kim) is best, you may ask the way to farm or buy in Vinh Kim market.
– Mar and Apr are Mango season, the best is Cai Be.
– May, Jun and Jul are season of rambutan and durian. From My Tho city, go along Le Thi Hong Gam street about 15km (10 miles) to Ngu Hiep junction, then cross Ngu Hiep islet. Rambutan and durian are piled like a moutain. You should find way to the farms to buy best fruits.
– Aug and Sep is Longan season. You cross Rach Mieu bridge (cầu Rạch Miễu) to the second overpass, you get under Phung islet (cồn Phụng). Along this road is quite beautiful, funny people, luxuriant vegetation, you can even pick few fruits to eat also ok.
– Dec, Tan My Chanh (Tân Mỹ Chánh) and Go Cong (Gò Công) are immense with watermelon farms.
– Close to Lunar New Year, Tan My Chanh is very beautiful with flower gardens are entering Spring.
Hotels and Motels in My Tho
There are not many hotels in Tien Giang, 2 good hotels that you may consult.
– Hong Phuc hotel at 246/8 – Ap Bac street (in an alley on Ap Bac street)
– Cong Doan hotel at 61 – Ba Muoi Thang Tu street (30/4 street).
Addition, you may find the other hotels on Ly Thuong Kiet and Ap Bac street, average prices are quite cheap, from $5 to $8 / double room / night.
Where and what to eat in My Tho
Hu Tieu
Hu Tieu, a type of noodle, is famous specialty of Tien Giang. Hu Tieu is also very popular dish in Southern Vietnam, but in Tien Giang, it’s really very different. You may enjoy this dish in following restaurants:
– Vegetarian Hu Tieu on Nguyen Trung Truc street, opposite Vinh Trang temple. Addition, this restaurant also has many other vegetarian dishes. A special, this restaurant use their most of profit to help poor children.
– Pock Hu Tieu on Le Dai Hanh street, opposite a bank. The restaurant only serve in the morning.
– Squid Hu Tieu on the road to Thanh Tri market, serve all day. The restaurant has big tree and few bird cages in the font.
– Beef Hu Tieu on Le Dai Hanh, near the My Tho market, only serve from 6pm to 9pm.
– Sa te Huong Hu Tieu on Nam Ky Khoi Nghia street. There are 2 restaurants close together, but Huong restaurant is better. ($1 / bowl)
– Restaurant at the end of Yersin and Ap Bac streets. Only $0.7 / bowl, very tasty.
– Thao Loan Hu Tieu at 10 Giong Dua street, serve in late night. $0,6 / bowl
Other tasty restaurants
– Nam Chuot restaurant, on Tran Hung Dao street. There are many tasty dishes.
– Chi Thanh rice at 279 – Tet Mau Than street. Tasty rice, price $1.5 / ration. Next to this restaurant is Hong Thuy noodle, also quite tasty.
– Sticky rice at the end of Tran Hung Dao – Ly Thuong Kiet streets. It’s very very tasty.
– Snake soup at 460 – Ly Thuong Kiet street. You have to arrive early they usually sell out at 4pm to 6pm. Avrage price is $5 / ration.
– Tay Hoi seafood near the junction of Tet Mau Than – Ap Bac street.
– Eating late at night, you come to Cu market (Old market) or Tien riverside.
– Crab soup in an alley of Le Thi Hong Gam street, where has a church.
– Dishes from snake on Ly Thuong Kiet street, near double bridge (Cầu Đôi).
